10 things you need to know about this week

Mayfest opened in sensational style at the weekend with The Dan Daw Show, Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel and asses.masses (which was the longest ever performance of the show by the way, running for more than 9+ hours on Sunday). A BIG thank you to everyone who came out to support and toast to our launch with us.

We still have tonnes of shows and talks coming up this week, so do dive into the programme and join us for some, if not of all of it.

We’re starting indoors this week before heading outside - so here’s how you should be planning your week.

1.

Zvizdal (Chernobyl - so far, so close) by Berlin opens tonight at Unit 15. It’s a hybrid documentary film and theatrical installation; a portrait of solitude, survival, poverty, hope and love between two elderly people surrounded by colourless, odourless omnipresent radiation. Snap up your ticket before they’re gone.

2.

We’re back at the stunning The Mount Without this Thu 23 and Fri 24 May with Goner by Marikiscrycrycry - a visceral and suspense-filled choreographic journey into the psychological depths of the Goner’s horror. Book tickets.

3.

We’re heading to the Waterfront for the UK Premiere of Arch this Fri-Sat. An exquisite combination of human voice, relentless physicality, and heart, entangled with the perpetual inevitability of collapse, it’s a perfect way to end your day outdoors.

4.

You can get yourself a nice cold pint of Mayfest Pale from the bar at all festival venues bars across the week (shout out to our friends at Good Chemistry)

5.

Jo Bannon’s Sleight of Hand is back on Wednesday at SPARKS. We still have some time slots available, so make sure you book your tickets. We asked some audiences what they thought of the show and loved this one… “pink, provoking and squidgy”

6.

JUST ANNOUNCED. Are you interested in how art can help us understand how our city is changing? We’re hosting a talk at Design West this Saturday afternoon, as part of our ongoing residency project Confluence. Book your FREE ticket here.

7.

We have lots of tasty digital treats you can enjoy from wherever you are. Check out our digital programme which includes The Making of PinocchioAnything Moving.

8.

Step into the creative minds of some of Bristol’s most inspiring young creatives. Marley Small and MAYK present Shades of Colour, an interactive audio/visual performance fusing sound and art to inspire creation, reflection, and exploration. Presented in collaboration with Saffron. Fri 24 May.

9.

On Sat 25 May, Aish Humphreys presents Memories: Spoken, Summoned, Seen – an eclectic evening of spoken word and multidisciplinary performance art from Arun Sood, Biogal and Raina Griefer, exploring stories of marginalised identities and how they evoke memory through performance. Presented in collaboration with Rising.

10.

This Thursday at 11am we’re hosting an informal conversation between artists Jo Bannon and Holly Thomas, exploring creating work with and for visually-impaired audiences. Free, but you’ll need to book your tickets.
