Mayfest 2009

The list of shows performed at Mayfest 2009 contains work by Chris Goode, who at the time was abusing many people involved in his work, and beyond. We are including the work on this page because it happened and we can’t pretend it didn’t, and more importantly to recognise the valuable creative contributions of his collaborators, many of whom – alongside us – were unaware of what was happening.

  • Taste

    An informal platform event in various spaces across Bristol Old Vic. This is designed to celebrate and share a broad range of fresh new work from over twenty of Bristol’s most exciting theatre artists.

  • Black Tonic by The Other Way Works

    An interactive, site-specific performance in the bedrooms and corridors of Holland House Hotel, Bristol. Here for its South West debut.

  • Anima by Tmesis (in collaboration with Malou Airaudo and Tanya Khabarova)

    A lyrical piece with engaging physicality, aerial elements and a pulsating original soundtrack. This performance aims to reveal the conflict and harmony within all of us.

  • John Moran... and his Neighbour Saori by Aurora Nova Productions

    John Moran’s work as a composer is an intricate blend of music, sound, choreography and theatre. Performed with his collaborator and dancer, Saori Tsukada, this assemblage of disarming, theatrical and multi-layered self-portraits are expertly crafted.

  • Polaris by Adriatic

    An enchanting story about two men on an Antarctic pilgrimage, inspired by adventure novels and the desire to discover unknown territories. Mixing imagination and reality, this piece is brought to you by performers, Vojta Švejda and Jan Beneš-McGadie.

  • The Smile Off Your Face by Ontroerend Goed

    A disorientating and extraordinary performance about experiencing, not viewing. As a spectator, you are tied to a wheelchair and blindfolded, and invited to imagine your surroundings. Developed in association with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd.

  • Hard Hearted Hannah... and Other Stories by Cartoon de Salvo

    An improvised show, where every performance will be entirely unique. You are invited to choose from a selection of playlists, then yarns are spun using only your imagination and thin air.

  • Paperweight by Top of the World

    An absurd story of two men trapped in mindless office jobs, blending surreal comedy, visual poetry and arresting storytelling to present a bold and uncompromising theatrical experience.

  • If That's All There Is by Inspector Sands

    A mini epic of longing, envy, disappointment and psychobabble. This performance takes a funny and unflinching look at our obsession with finding happiness.

  • The Paper Cinema by Nic Beard

    This charming event brings to life ink sketches through a bewitching fusion of live music and puppetry. We invite you into the private spaces of Bristol Old Vic.

  • Richard's Love by Bric a Brac Productions

    An engaging fairytale that weaves intricate shadow puppetry and quirky mask characters, with a strange and beautiful soundtrack. Performed in the Bristol Old Vic Studio.

  • Sir Gregory's Hutch by Soap Soup Hutch

    A moving and magical piece fusing puppetry, music and live performance. This is the second show to be performed in the Bristol Old Vic Studio.

  • To Have and To Honk by The HONK Project

    A special blend of amicable chaos and hilarious physical theatre. Fourteen musical instruments, four clowns and one wedding - their journey may not quite go according to plan...

  • Delta Foxtrot by Orbita

    A devised work inspired by the quest of scientific discovery and the conflicts and connections between science and religion. Orbita are an emerging company, performing in their Mayfest debut.

  • Our Fathers' Ears by Tinned Fingers

    An experimental piece that invites you to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, and question how we interact with ‘the wild’. An exploration of evolution, extinction and survival by the Bristol-based company.

  • John and Jim's Empty Room by Roustabout

    An improvised clown show, performed by John McGrellis and Jim Rastell, which is different every time. Developed in collaboration with Toby Hulse.

  • Kellerman by imitating the dog and Pete Brooks

    A gothic and visually arresting performance about obsessive desire, demonic doctors and monstrous nurses. A piece that combines film, animation and live action, and draws on graphic novels.

  • The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley by Chris Goode

    A new solo performance that combines intimate storytelling, animation and music to create a comic-book, super-hero story about growing up and getting braver.

  • Home of the Wriggler by Stan's Cafe

    A unique performance where the actors utilise a range of ageing technologies live on stage. This piece examines how our fates are intertwined in a volatile global economy, linking to climate change.

  • Of All the People in All the World by Stan's Cafe

    A politically-engaged and moving installation performance that explores a vast array of human statistics. Over the course of four days, 989kg of rice - a grain for everyone in the country - is weighed.

  • My World is Empty Without You by Duncan Speakman

    An immersive performance where the audience wear headphones and travel across the city, combining an engaging soundtrack, turning the surrounding world into a personal cinema. Commissioned by Mayfest, this piece explores social disconnection.

    A thrilling blend of music, dance and physical theatre. This second Czech performance company featured in Mayfest 2009 analyses the worlds of their great-grandfathers and the clash with contemporary central European life, exploring territories of childhood games, courtships and age-old hopes.

  • The Middle Bit by Edward Rapley

    A reflexive performance that explores a loss of meaning and sight of your dreams. Developed in association with Mayfest, this is the second part of a trilogy that begins with 10 Ways to Die On Stage.

  • H.E.L.P/H.O.P.E by Little Bulb Theatre

    This new work explores political apathy and the struggles of being made redundant in an age of financial crises. This critically acclaimed company were inspired by a certain “audacity of hope” and the help of strangers.

    A gaudy, anarchic pantomime of degradation and delight, this performance combines elements of carnival and funfair, inviting you to embrace the fool.

  • Hoochie Coochie by Keda Breeze

    An exciting arts event that features Empress Stah, one of the world’s greatest cabaret performers. This platform showcases outstanding performers from a multitude of genres.
