I Like It. What Is It?
What’s your boomerang idea? The one that won’t leave you alone, that you believe in but haven’t been given the opportunity to properly explore?
I Like It. What Is It? is a two-year residency programme, hosted by MAYK and supported by Jerwood Arts, that is an attempt to move away from what sometimes feels like an insatiable industry appetite for the zeitgeist. We want artists to be able to slow down, to remember.
The residency is designed to create breathing space and bespoke support to artists playing with intricate early ideas. We’ve called these ‘boomerang’ ideas; the ones that keep coming back, that linger and insist on attention but without knowing their form yet. In this process, as ever, we will prioritise care, slow-working and mischief. There is no fixed outcome. It’s time to play.
After an extraordinary few months of reading and discussing an abundance of brave and brilliant ideas from artists all across the country, we’ve selected Malaika Kegode and Handina Dutiro, Kit Hall, Luca Rutherford and Malik Nashad Sharpe as our I Like It. What is It? residents. Over the next two years, we will be working closely together to develop a space for experimentation, playfulness and thoughtfulness. We’re delighted to see what happens and to be working with these brilliant humans.
