Opportunity: MAYK Board Members & Chair

Like most arts organisations, MAYK has a board of directors who help us make good decisions, make sure the finances and legal aspects of running a company are all ship-shape, and who offer advice, expertise and support. Being on a board is fascinating and rewarding. You get a real insight into how a company runs, you get to meet different kinds of people, and you learn a lot.

As being on a board is voluntary, we ask people to sit on the board for a limited period, usually three years, although you can extend your term after those three years are over. MAYK's board is going through a period of development as some members step down (including our amazing former Chair Seth Honnor from Kaleider).

So we're on the hunt for exceptional individuals to join the board (including someone to become the Chair) at an exciting period of change for the organisation.

And we're looking for people from lots of different backgrounds. Maybe you've been on other boards before and are looking for a new challenge. Maybe you've never sat on a board before and want to gain experience. Maybe you think you have something valuable to offer us, like a particular skill or expertise.

We think that the best organisations have a diversity of voices, so regardless of who you are or where you're from, if you feel like you have something to offer an organisation like MAYK, we want to hear from you.

There are also some areas of expertise we're keen to have represented on the board, particularly branding/marketing, fundraising and development, creative practice (we're looking at you, artists), law (in particular IP or charity law), and people who work with neighbourhood/community organisations in Bristol.

We welcome applications from anyone regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.

Before you apply, have a read of this information about being a MAYK board member.

FAQ

Do I have to have previous experience of being on an arts organisation's board?

Not at all.

Do I have to have a background in the arts

No – we want to hear from you whatever your area of expertise.

Can I apply in other ways rather than as a written document?

Yes. If you'd like an informal chat about becoming a board member call us (on 0117 925 9999) email us at matthewandkate@mayk.org.uk. If you'd like to apply using a video or audio file, that's absolutely fine.

What happens after I apply?

If we think you might be a good fit and you meet the basic criteria, Kate and Matthew will arrange a time to meet you informally. There could also be an opportunity for you to chat to an existing board member. You'll then be invited to observe a board meeting. If you'd like to formally join as a board member after that meeting you'll be signed up in time for the following meeting.
