As a part of a collaborative commission between MAYK and Bristol Pride, Bristol-based multi-disciplinary artist Tim Lytc is hosting two free queer movement workshops at the end of this month, taking place in the MAYKING Space at our St. Anne’s headquarters.

The workshops are open to trans, nonbinary, and gender non-comforming adults of all abilities. Read Tim’s full callout below for more information and instructions on how to apply.

About me
Hey! I'm Tim (they/them), a Hong Kong born dancer, choreographer, movement-maker. I work with the multidimensional layers of being queer and asian, cultural interactions of English vs Cantonese, and interconnections of mental and physical wellbeing. Through my work I aim to question and decolonise patriarchal, hyper-productive, heteronormative, ableist societal structures, and normalise collective play, care and rest.

As part of ongoing research for my MA course at Trinity Laban, and in conjunction with MAYK x Bristol Pride, I am offering two free workshops for Trans, Non-Binary and gender non-conforming folks.

Dates & Times
29th July, 2-5pm
31st July, 11-2pm
Venue: MAYKING Space, St Anne's House, BS4 4AB

What to expect
Our body brings together our very self, it literally holds us together. It connects us to ourselves and with others in different ways. It also holds many emotions, often times negative - tensions, pain, grief, and shame for many Queer folks. How can dance/movement support that connection, encouraging comfort, wellbeing, creativity and joy?

In these workshops we will explore different ways of moving and thinking about the body.

Inspired by my experiences with yoga, Ballet, Contemporary Dance, and somatic approaches to movement, these workshops will be open, gentle and relaxing. Offerings of increase in body awareness, mindful movement, and moving without judgement - It will be a space to move, reflect, play and rest, with time to draw, write and discuss any thoughts, feelings and sensations that may arise.

Brief rundown of workshop structure

  • Warm-up involving light stretches and movement of attention

  • Guided improvisation and movement sequence that awakens internal to external awareness

  • Writing/drawing activities incorporating somatic approaches to movement creativity

  • Learn how to move with others and create your own movement

  • Time for reflection and discussions throughout the workshop

The workshops are open to Trans, Non-Binary and gender non-conforming adults (age 18 and above) from all movement backgrounds and experience, including anyone with limited mobility. While both sessions will have the same structure, the session on 29th July is designed to be more suited to those with little to no movement experience. While those who are more confident movers are encouraged to join the session on 31st July.

In return, I ask for openness to the process, honest feedback on facilitation of the workshops, permission to share your reflections (whether from writing, drawing, or discussions) as part of my MA course + to be used in R&D with MAYK x Bristol Pride.
